SDF thwarts attack by Syrian regime-backed mercenaries

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Media Center released a statement on its official website giving details of the attack carried out by mercenaries in Deir ez-Zor on October 29. The SDF reported that 3 SDF fighters were killed in the clashes, and 4 civilians were killed and 10 others wounded as a result of the mercenaries’ attack.

The statement said that mercenaries backed by the Syrian regime launched an attack on the villages and towns of Abu Hardoub, Dhiban and Abu Hamam using heavy weapons, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. Noting that the mercenaries tried to infiltrate villages and towns, the SDF said that 19 mercenaries were killed in fierce clashes, including 6 in the town of Dhiban and 13 in the village of Abu Hardoub. In addition, a vessel transporting a group of mercenaries was destroyed and 20 mercenaries were wounded, including Marwan Al-Fadel, a leading figure in the Syrian regime-backed ‘Aousoud al-Sharkiya’ militia. The SDF also seized a significant amount of weapons, ammunition and military equipment.

A mortar shell fired by the mercenaries hit a civilian house, killing four civilians and wounding ten others, the statement said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also confirmed that four civilians were killed and others injured as a result of shells fired by regime forces hitting a house. Three SDF fighters were also killed in clashes with the regime-backed mercenaries.

The Syrian Democratic Forces concluded their statement by reaffirming their unwavering commitment to preserving the security and stability of the region, adding: “Our forces stand resolute in taking decisive measures against anyone who seeks to jeopardize the safety and tranquility of our region.”
