Amid an escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Iranian militias attacked two U.S. military bases in Syria yesterday, again and within a week of each other. The targets of these coordinated attacks were the strategic bases of Al-Tanf and Rukban, located on the Syrian-Iraqi border.
According to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, U.S. forces shot down an Iranian militia drone that attacked the Al-Tanf base on the Syrian-Iraqi border. In parallel, they foiled another attempted attack on the nearby Al-Rukban base on the Syrian-Iranian border.
The armed militias called themselves the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” claimed responsibility for the attacks on U.S. bases, saying they “hit direct targets.”
Meanwhile, in a statement released yesterday, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed concern about recent escalations by Iran and its affiliated forces in the Middle East. He announced, “Following extensive discussions with President Joe Biden about the recent escalation by Iran and forces acting on its behalf throughout the Middle East, today I issued instructions to implement a series of additional measures to strengthen Iran’s position in the region.
