On August 31, 2023, the US Operation Inherent Resolve, which was previously launched for the sake of militarily fighting ISIS in Syria and Iraq, issued a joint statement that pledged its continuous support to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in order to jointly fight ISIS.
The statement clearly stated that any distraction from this “crucial mission” might inevitably lead to the “increase of a resurgence of ISIS” and thus, has to be taken seriously. The US Operation further emphasized the importance of violence in North and East Syria to be fought in order to be able to create a climate of peace, stability and security.
The statement came nearly in concomitance after the launching of the Operation “Security Reinforcement” against ISIS by the SDF Forces in the Deir-Er-Zoor Governorate, located in the Northeastern part of Syria. The Operation was launched in cooperation with the US-spearheaded Global Coalition against ISIS. Even though the terrorist organization was supposedly defeated in 2019 after losing its military stronghold in Al-Baghouz, the imminent threat of ISIS’ revival is still imminent. In fact, many former fighters and affiliated had been transferred to prisons and camps, the most notorious one being the Al-Hol Camp, however, clandestine sleeping cells still continue to operate inside Syria and threaten the whole country’s overall security amid the ongoing civil war since 2011.
Moreover, on August 30, 2023, a Commander from the Deir-Er-Zoor Military Council had been officially dismissed from his duty on allegations of power abuse following the divulgence of his committed crimes and violations.
