Just recently, Moroccan authorities have repatriated two young men after they were “accidentally” deported by the Turkish authorities to Northern Syria. According to local sources, Turkish authorities had deported those two young mean to Syria after handing them over to the “anti-smuggling” department in the city of Azaz, situated at the Turkish-Syrian border.
It was reported that the Turkish authorities had arrested the two men and subsequently transferred them to a deportation center in Istanbul; in spite of both Moroccans possessing their visas and passports, they were nevertheless deported to Syria.
Following their arrival in Azaz, the Moroccan embassy contacted the Turkish authorities and the Security Directorate in Azaz, and the two young men were returned to Turkey and then to Morocco.
As a matter of fact, both Moroccan nationals came to Turkey with a tourist visa; however, their deportation comes in the light of a massive deportation campaign against Syrian refugees, which is further rooted in increasing racism towards Syrians. In March 2022, Turkey also „accidentally“deported four Afghan men to the Idlib countryside in northwestern Syria.
This act of the Turkish authorities further displays the inherent racism against Syrians as well as the increasing infringement on their rights. Given the fact that both Moroccan nationals had all the necessary documents and that the Moroccan dialect hugely differs from the Syrian, a proper identification would have been easy and simply feasible.
