The Kurdish leftists to „Target“: „Russia is suffocating us and the International Coalition applies double standards regarding Northern Syria“

Target Platform – Ahmad Qatma

The issue of humanitarian crossings into Syria occupies a large area of concern to the Syrians, in light of the need of many of them for international care, regardless of the size of Syria’s territory. However, the intervention of international and regional parties deprives some of the Syrians of that care and aid, in favor of directing it to specific areas of Syria, whereby the country enjoys the approval of the interventionists in the Syrian affairs.

Meanwhile, a large percentage of the Syrians, estimated at 6 million people, whether natives, immigrants or displaced persons, in the Northeastern part of the country, pay the price of the dissatisfaction of regional or international powers with them, on the one hand, and on the other hand, there is the silence of the international powers, who were considered to be their allies.

Turkey’s relations with Al-Nusra … and the arrival of aid to their areas

On the occasion of the conversation, on the 4th of July, a UN official stressed, during a visit to the city of Sarmada in the Idlib Governorate, situated in Northwestern Syria, the need to extend the mechanism for entering aid across the borders for a year. He further affirmed that there is no alternative to it to provide relief to the millions of people displaced by the war, ignoring the at the same time, other Syrians are on the other side of the Euphrates.

Regarding the entry of officials from the United Nations into areas, under the control of terrorist organizations, such as “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham / Jabhat al-Nusra”, in Sarmada, Idlib, “Muhammad Musa”, Secretary-General of the Kurdish Leftist Party in Syria (P.Ç.K.S), enunciated in an interview with the Target platform the following words: “With regard to the crossings and in dealing with the Syrian situation in general, whether it is Northwestern Syria or Northeastern Syria, and even with the regime, there is a bizarre double standard“.

He continued: „In fact, the United Nations and the influential international powers are completely willing to deal with areas controlled by terrorist groups, at the forefront of which are Jabhat al-Nusra or Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham but, as for other areas, there are reservations“.

He further added: „I think that this is connected, in the first place, to the interests of the influential states whether at the regional level or even at the international level; and Turkey thereby has a prominent role in dealing with Northeastern Syria or what is called the East of the Euphrates, and it limitations of any form of cooperation or the provision of aid or relief to this region“.

But when it comes to the other regions, the matter is completely different, and you are well aware of the Turkish state’s relations with the groups that control Northwestern Syria, including Jabhat al-Nusra. Therefore, Turkey has reservations about entering aid into Northeastern Syria and thus, only cooperates when aid is approved to enter Northwestern Syria,” says the Kurdish politician.

He continues: „As for the regime, you are aware of the close relations of the Russian Federation with it, whereby the latter seeks, in any way, to pass the regime’s agendas and to support its positions. And as it is known to everyone, when the attempt was made to open the crossings to Northeastern Syria, specifically the Tal Kochar/Al-Ya’roubiya crossing, the veto of the Russians was on the lookout, and even the regime strongly objected the opening of the crossings posed the condition that it had to be under its control and management in spite of the Autonomous Administration’s suggestions to form a joint administration between the two parties. The regime, however, staunchly refused.

Moreover, „Mohammed Musa“ indicated that „the Russian Federation always presses towards suffocating those regions (Northern and Eastern Syria), in cooperating with the regime, Turkey and Iran, in the sense that the Astana Quartet has always had reservations about any opening towards the regions of the Northern and Eastern part of Syria, and therefore the process is solely linked to the agendas and interests of those countries“.

Why does the United Nations not look at the various Syrian regions with one eye?

The Secretary-General of the Kurdish Leftist Party in Syria answered that inquiry to “Target” by saying: “The United Nations is not an executive force but rather a force that may legitimize or approve something regarding this or that region, but the countries that dominate the United Nations, especially the Russian Federation In Syria, is always on the lookout to object any decision to open up to the areas of Northeastern Syria. Hence, Syria, in general, is a victim of an international and regional conflict, in which everyone is trying to pass their agendas and interests at the expense of the Syrian people with its various peoples.

On the 10th of July, the authorization, granted by the Security Council to work with the mechanism of entering aid across the border into Syria for a period of six months, without passing through the areas, controlled by the Central government, terminated, as the Security Council had just allowed, in 2014, the crossing of aid through four border points, but they were soon reduced successively, under pressure from Moscow and Beijing, the two allies of Damascus. Consequently, humanitarian aid was limited it to the Bab al-Hawa crossing located at the border between Syria and Turkey.

On the 7th of July, Russia submitted a proposal to extend the approval of the UN Security Council to deliver aid to Northwestern Syria from Turkey, for a period of six months, thus, reviving a chronic battle with the United States and its allies, who want to renew it for a period of 12 months, while the Central government in Damascus preempted the voting process, by announcing its rejection of the Western proposal to extend the mechanism for a period of 12 months and confirming its refusal to include the Bab al-Salama and al-Rai crossings in the consultations.

The Syrian newspaper, Al-Watan, said that the Damascus government agreed to extend the authorization for the entry of aid through the Bab al-Hawa crossing, but for a period of 6 months only, in line with the counter-proposal put forward by Russia in the Security Council.

The newspaper also quoted the regime’s demand to include the UN resolution by “improving” the draft resolution in terms of “promoting early recovery projects and emphasizing the activation of the mechanism for introducing aid across lines from regime-controlled areas,” in addition to “finding sustainable solutions to the humanitarian situation in Syria.“

Regarding Damascus’ insistence on passing the aid exclusively for 6 months instead of a year, and what that would man, the Kurdish politician explained that “the decision is not issued by the regime’s authorities, but rather as much as it is agreed upon by the powers allied, whether it is the Russian Federation, Iran, or even Turkey.” He continued: “The regime does not want to extend it because the changes in the Syrian arena are completely accelerating, thus, the period of six months because something may happen or develop after its expiry“.

The international Coalition applies double standards

The decision of the international coalition, the Americans and the Europeans, to remain silent regarding the close of the crossings, brought up many question marks in local entities in Northern and Eastern Syria, who seem vexed by this silence that is closer to satisfaction as well as the tacit approval of the humanitarian and relief blockade. Simultaneously, the Kurdish politician “Muhammad Musa” stressed that “Turkey has a prominent role in closing the crossings to Northern and Eastern Syria.“

He further continued: „I think that the international coalition, spearheaded by the United States, applies double standards in Northeastern Syria and Turkey. You know very well that Turkey is an ally of the United States and the Western coalition in general, and it is a member of the NATO; plus, settlements were made in the last meeting of the NATO, in addition to the meeting between the US president and President Erdogan, and for the sake of these settlements, the Western alliance is trying to not annoy Turkey, in any way. Their goal is in fact, to not push Turkey towards the Russian Federation.

Muhammad Musa also emphasized Turkey’s strong orientation towards the Russian Federation in the last two years and added: “But it seems that after the last elections, and Erdogan’s re-election, Turkey began to reconsider its policies and try to settle its situation with the Western alliance as well as with NATO, in return for some temptations provided by Western countries, such as F-16 aircraft, in addition to other issues.

He concluded: “Therefore, the Western coalition does not want to lose Turkey and push it towards the Russian Federation, especially after the conflict over Ukraine and the ongoing war there, in addition to the coalition’s unwillingness to lose what it calls its local allies in northeastern Syria“.

The Americans and their allies are trying to achieve the exact balance in a way that does not lose its main, essential and historical ally, which is the Turkish State, in addition to its local ally, as they claim, with whom it has been dealing for many years for the purpose of fighting terrorism as this region (Northeast Syria) is currently a foothold for America and its allies,” explains the Secretary-General of the Kurdish Leftist Party in Syria, to „Target“.

He concludes to “Target” by saying: “I do not think that there is another place or ground from which America and its allies can move to confront Iran and the Russian Federation. All of these things push America and its allies towards achieving a certain balance between two contradictory allies (Turkey and the Autonomous Administration), although Ankara is blatantly infringing on the other party, which is the Democratic Autonomous Administration, in Northeastern Syria.

This is done, so that the population in the Northern and Eastern areas of Syria will continue to pay the Turkish neighborhood tax, depriving them of aid, as the simplest right, and the least compensation for the struggle of international powers over their land, in which they have no camel left.
