Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader and the presidential candidate of the Nation Alliance in the Turkish elections, published a video on his refugee policies. In the video, Kilicdaroglu states that he will meet with the Syrian government, adding that a protocol will be prepared with the Syrian authorities for the safety of the life and property of those who will return to Syria. Announcing that the EU and the UN will be included in the protocol preparation, the presidential candidate also states that Turkish contractors will build the returning refugees’ houses, schools, roads, and kindergartens with the funds obtained from the collaboration. “Both our country and the Syrians will win,” he emphasizes
Kilicdaroglu considers the refugee problem as a resource problem. In his video message, he explains that all analyses indicate that if Türkiye does not take precautions, the Euphrates and Tigris will risk drying up in the next 20 years. He continues his speech as follows: “This situation does not only mean that agriculture will be damaged in the southeast region of Turkey, our hydroelectric power plants will also lose their function and there will be a serious lack of water. This means that more than 60 million people living in Türkiye and our southern neighbors Syria and Iraq are facing famine and thirst. If we do not take precautions, hungry refugees from Syria and Iraq will flock to Türkiye.”
Kemal Kilicdaroglu believes that if Türkiye loses its infrastructure, it will not be able to even keep the citizens of Türkiye, let alone the refugees and fugitives. “We will sit down and solve this problem together,” says President Erdogan’s rival. He states that he will bring the Syrians back to their homeland within 2 years at the latest. The funds will also be used to increase the climate resilience of Türkiye. Kilicdaroglu underlines the necessity with the following words: “We have to do this. They have to be involved. Otherwise, neither Iraq nor Syria will remain. Everyone will be at the gates of Europe.”
