“We are willing to host our Syrian brothers and sisters from Lebanon”

More than 1.5 million refugees from Syria are believed to be living in Lebanon. Based on the number of inhabitants, Lebanon has hosted the largest quantity of refugees in the world. The figures are imprecise, 846,000 refugees were officially registered in 2015 whereby official figures were available since then.

According to the UN refugee agency, almost 90% of Syrian refugees in Lebanon live below the extreme poverty line. The war in Syria, the explosion catastrophe in Beirut in 2020 and the corona pandemic hit the country, which was already plagued by internal crises. Now the crisis in Lebanon has been exacerbated by rising global inflation.

In the midst of this crisis, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) announced its willingness to accept Syrian refugees from Lebanon. Bedran Ciya Kurd, Co-Chair of AANES External Relations Office, explained the difficult situation in Lebanon and expressed his wish for the country to improve. He drew attention to the difficult situation for the Syrian refugees in the country and then referred to the initiative presented by AANES, which was presented as a roadmap for a political solution to the Syrian crisis. He precisely said: “Under the initiative that we launched on April 18, there was a fundamental point about the refugees, so that the doors of the Autonomous Administration are open to all Syrians without any discrimination, which we regard as our human, moral and patriotic duty. „

Bedran Ciya Kurd called on the United Nations to also fulfill their obligations and allow the refugees to return through a humanitarian corridor. He further stated, “We are ready to receive and provide assistance and aid within our means. This dilemma is a humanitarian issue and it has to be resolved through joint coordination“.

However it remains uncertain whether the UN and the international community will heed this appeal. In Lebanon, time is ticking against the people in need.
