Remarkable tweets of imprisoned former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş ahead of the elections

HDP’s former co-chairman, Selahattin Demirtas, has been in prison since 2016. Demirtas, who was imprisoned as a result of raids, is still not released despite the decision of the European Court of Human Rights. The jailed politician, who has been involved in political developments through Twitter since his imprisonment, even ran in the Presidential elections in 2018 as a candidate from prison. We have compiled some catchy posts of Demirtas, known for his rhetorical irony on social media, on Twitter in the context of the May 2023 election campaign.

– On March 17, Demirtaş shared a tweet containing the prices of some foodstuffs, referring to the increase in inflation. He called AKP ‘the disaster of the century’.

“Türkiye is crying its heart out in hunger. Earthquake and flood neglect on the one hand, and increasing poverty on the other. AKP is the disaster of the century.”

– On the same day, Demirtas urged Turkish President Erdogan to leave politics because, according to Demirtas, he will be defeated in any case.

“Come on, announce that you will leave politics before it’s too late, let the country breathe. Oh, if you say, ‘It is my right to experience a historical electoral defeat,’ have no doubt that we will give you your due.”

– With the approaching elections, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s university diploma debate became the agenda again. The debate over Erdogan’s degree has been ongoing since 2014, as holding a university degree is a prerequisite for the presidential office in Türkiye. In Erdogan’s official biography, it is claimed that he graduated from the Marmara University, Faculty of Economic and Commercial Sciences in 1981. However, the fact that that faculty was established in 1982, according to the university’s website, raises doubts about the accuracy of his diploma. Selahattin Demirtaş also joined the controversy with his witty post on Twitter:

“We were wrong friends, there is the original of the diploma! If it wasn’t, everyone involved in crime would be taken to court after the election. Who would dare to take part in such a crime anyway!”

Selahattin Demirtaş also added the ‘diploma’ he had drawn on a napkin with ‘the stamp of the Turkish Republic’ on it. On the napkin he wrote the following words:

“DIPLOMA. “This person may have graduated from the ‘economist’ faculty. (May not have.) (But he certainly brought the country to a dead end). Marmara University of Different Sciences”

– After the presidential candidate of the Nation Alliance and CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was subjected to heavy criticism for the photo in which he was standing on a prayer rug, Selahattin Demirtas also commented on the critique. He shared photos of Erdogan holding the Quran in his speeches during his election campaigns.

“Is it a sin to steal people’s money, to try to market the Quran for the sake of votes, or to accidentally step on the prayer rug? You don’t need to be a Muslim to know the right answer, it’s enough to be human.”

– On April 7, visual communication designer Mahir Akkoyun was arrested for the stickers he designed. His stickers were affixed to some products in supermarkets by a group protesting high inflation and the decrease in purchasing power in the country. The following words were written on the sticker with the photos of Erdoğan and MHP leader Bahceli: “Do you find this product expensive? Thanks to Erdogan. Keep this in mind when voting.” Selahattin Demirtaş showed solidarity with Mahir Akkoyun with a creative tweet he shared with the caption ‘We are all Mahir’.

The post, in which Akkoyun’s sticker was redesigned, included the following words: “Has this person been unjustly detained? Thanks to Erdogan. Keep that in mind when voting.

– Demirtas’s recent post on Twitter was about the presidential elections. The imprisoned politician shared his call to vote for CHP leader Kilicdaroglu in a humorous way.

“In terms of mathematics, the Presidential ballot is actually like this. Please don’t waste your vote because you have the key to change.”
