Drone attack on US military base in Northeastern Syria: one casualty and six wounded

According to the US Department of Defense, a US citizen who worked for a private company was killed in a drone attack on a US military base near the city of Al-Hassakah in northeastern Syria. Six other people were injured in Thursday’s attack, including five US soldiers.

The Pentagon suspects an “Iranian-origin” drone was behind the attack. In the recent past, the US military shot down suspicious drones in the area, which were also believed to be behind Iran.

After the incident, the US military flew several attacks on targets in eastern Syria “that is said to be in contact with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards”. “No group can attack our troops with impunity,” said US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

The self-administration of northern and eastern Syria, where the US military is stationed, has been repeatedly attacked with drones. However, most of these attacks have been launched from Turkey and have resulted in the deaths of dozens of civilians and fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who is leading the fight with US forces against the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).
