Trilateral meeting between Syria and Turkey and Russia

The Russian Ministry of Defense publicly enunciated in a statement today, Wednesday the 28th December 2022 that it hosted tripartite talks of the defense ministers of Russia, Syria and Turkey. This trilateral meeting was further confirmed by the Turkish Ministry of Defense in the following statement: „The meeting included Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and his Russian and Syrian counterparts Sergei Shoigu and Ali Mahmoud Abbas, respectively, in addition to the heads of the three countries’ intelligence services“.
The Syrian regime however, did not issue any official statement regarding the trilateral meeting. According to the statements of Turkey and Russia, the issues of the Syrian crisis, the increasing refugee influx as well as the dilemma of extremism and terrorism were intensively discussed and debated.
Especially the rapprochement and normalization talks between Turkish President Erdogan and Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad following the continuous enmity between both parties with the beginning of the Syrian revolution and Turkey’s support for extremist groups was a recurrent topic.
In this context, the Syrian writer Ghassan Ibrahim commented on this meeting by saying that, “Erdogan is running to meet Bashar, hoping that he will open the door for the return of Syrian refugees and save him in the elections. The blood of the Syrians and their suffering will take revenge on you, Erdogan.“
